trying to come off .25 xanax 12 Years, 6 Months ago
this may not be a good question but i'm currently taking prozac to supress my panic disorder and i take .25mg of xanax everynight to help me sleep, and i've been doing it for the past 2 months. ( i started prozac about a month ago, still waiting for full effect hopefully) is it possible to wean off this dosage? i remember my psych told me that in a couple weeks of using prozac i will probably be able to wean off xanax but i want to do it before i go see him in about 2 weeks, so assuming that no one here is a doctor, just asking for general advice or opinions, would it be fine to not take xanax at night? i probably can sleep without it, but i hear all about these withdrawls and convulsion and seizure symptoms.

My advice would be to stay on it until you have a talk with your Doctor. You're inviting trouble and don't need it. I take 80 mg. of prozac every day. Yes, 4 pills of 20mg and it works for my DEPRESSION, not my anxiety. The xanax is for your anxiety and you don't want to get that up for any reason. Take care....Ed

I always think it is the best idea to talk to your doctor about your meds, your fears about your meds, your anxiety and your actions regarding prescribed medications.
That said, your doc told you what the plan was ... and I would assume that s/he would be involved in the "weaning" process. So personally, I would wait til the doctor told you to stop taking it.
Also, .25 is basically 1/4 of the standard dose of Xanax. It is nothing that is going to get you hooked or addicted, so you really don't have to worry about weaning. Not on that dose.
And certainly not for 2 months.
The problems with Xanax come after someone has been taking >2 mg daily for years. You're nowhere NEAR that.
So relax.
Take the Prozac. Take the Xanax. Let yourself recover from some of the effects of Panic and Anxiety.
Then get to work on the underlying issues. It sounds to me like your doc has a good handle on it.
Trust your doc.

I took .25mg of the generic for xanax for several years, then 3 times a day for a few months. Now I take only as needed. When done gradually and with your doctor's permission, you should not have a problem getting off xanax when you are ready. But talk it over with your doctor first, as others have suggested. Always the best policy.
