Herbal supplement medication question... 12 Years, 11 Months ago

I don't know if anyone has ever heard of Amoryn but it's a natural herb supplment that is for people who suffer anxiety, panic, OCD and depression. I took a look at their website and it's a natural supplement that is compared to Paxil and Prozac and a few others. The ingrediants are St. John's Wort, valerian root, and 5-htp. I know a lot of these herbs are sold in drug stores and in Wal-Mart. I don't know how well they work but I have heard that a lot of people take them instead of SSRI's cause there's no side effects and not habit-forming. I was thinking about giving Amoryn a try but I would have to contact my dr to see if I could take xanax along with them cause Amoryn takes a few weeks to a month to start taking effect. I was considering Amoryn since it was like a SSRI.
I think the xanax alone will help with the anxiety but I want something that will help my seratonion. And that is where the 5-htp comes in. I know you can get those supplements alone at drug stores, they are like a vitamin that helps build seratonion but I am not sure if I could take them with Xanax, I guess a pharmacist and dr would know. I don't suffer from depression, I just have generalized anxiety, panic attacks now and then, and intrusive thoughts so I'd say have a moderate case of OCD. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with herbal supplements or even take 5-htp. Thanks!

In addition to taking prozac, wellbutrin and a .5 tab of klonopin at bed time, I also take St. John's Wort( I take 3 300mg tabs in the morning as soon as I wake up) Works for me. I found a web site for hard to get herbs called Arena Botanicals. Just google it and it comes right up. They are hugh and are based in California. Take care....Ed

Irish: So, it's OK to take St. John's Wort with Prozac? I thought it wasn't. I'm on Wellbutrin but also take 5-HTP and SAM-e.

Pinhead, you need to check out that question with a professional since we are all different. I actually take 3 more 300mg tabs at 4:00Pm for a tota in the day of 1800MG. Works for me. You should talk with a psychiatrist only when dealing with the meds and supplements. I also take some other herbs as well and for now I have the right combo to make a good quality day after day for me. Take care.....Ed
