I've always been a very nervous, shy and emotional person. I remember as a child being afraid of everything bad that could happen. Killers on the loose, tornadoes, all that kind of stuff. About Thanksgiving time in 2003 I started getting more anxious.

By Christmas time I had had it! I missed out on Christmas Eve at my in-laws because of panic attacks. That was the final push to send me to the doctor. I went in January of 2004 and was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Attacks.

He put me on Paxil and Klonopin and so far it's working. I hate my kids seeing me when I do have an attack, they are 7 and 5, and they are too young to really understand what's going on. They try to help and I just tell them that mommy needs a time-out. It seems to work.

I am worried about my 7 year old though. He is exactly like I was, he worries about everything. I try to help him through the hard times though. Besides the meds, I have found that relaxation breathing helps. I sit back and really concentrate on my breathing. I have found a book that has also helped- The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmond Borne. It has a lot of relaxation techniques.

Talking to the people on here has really helped me, just knowing that someone else is going through the same things. Finally at age 27 I feel like a semi-normal person again. I am still shy in person, I always think people are going to be judgmental but on-line I can really be myself and talk about what is going on. I can only hope that by being here I can help one person realize that they are not alone in this fight. There is an army of us fighting this monster everyday and we are winning!
