i had my first real panic attack in sept. after being very sick w a stomach virus and dehydrating, had to go to er to get fluids. the panic started after that point for a couple of weeks.  i seemed to get a bit better, i saw my general pract. doc and also saw a counsellor. i began taking buspar, very low dose, as well as ativan as needed. i went a couple months without any real issues. then tuesday, i had a panic attack again out of nowhere.  i had been sick again w a little upper respiratory problem, but i wasnt worrying about it at all, actually was starting to feel better. now, since tues. i am constantly in panic mode with daily panic attacks! its driving me nuts, im taking vitamins, my meds, and reading books, doing cbt, nothing seems to work so far.  i feel like it wont get better. i kind of think it may be related to my h1n1 vaccine i received a couple weeks before.  seems to be happening near my cycle, and near when i get sick? any thoughts or ideas for help? im utilizing all my resources, i want to get back to myself and concentrate on my normal activities again!!!!!

The thing about panic attacks is that they can strike suddenly with no warning. I also had my first one when I was sick, combined with a very pressured work situation with lots of travel. You can tie it to a particular trigger in your case but I think you need to look at your own emotional history. Have you been a worrier? Do you find things running over and over in your head like a CD on automatic restart? There's lots of other things that can be indicators. Have you been back to the doctor since the panics restarted? GPs can be very conservative when it comes to prescribing tranqs, anti-depressives and other psychotherapic drugs. This can mean that they are supplying too little of the drug in your particular case. My psychiatrist more than doubled my meds dosage when I went back for recurring panics - I won't stay at the current levels but he want's me stabilised before he starts to cut back on them. Also you may find that the combination of meds doesn't actually suit you. Many people find they have to try three or four different meds before they find the one that is best suited to them. The other thing is therapy with a psychologist - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy usually has good results with panics. Also add alternative therapies to your arsenal - essential oils such as Jasmine and Lavender are calming whether rubbed on pulse points or used in an oil burner. Reflexology is gentle and safe as a good reflexologist acts as another therapist because you can talk to them about your problems as they work on your feet. Hope you find what works for you. Hugs.

I agree with you woodowl. Go back to the doctor ask about your meds and find yourself some kind of therapy. Finding the right meds can be a trial and error thing. Panic attacks have a life of their own and come when we least expect them. A week before my cycle starts I turn into a looney tune and have panic attacks etc. I have only been on my meds for a few weeks now and am waiting to see how they work before my cycle begins. If I can make it through that I know my meds are working. I've had to stop one of my therapies for a while while I am in this IOP group because my insurance wont pay for both but just as soon as I am done with IOP I am going back to my regular therapist and start seeing a psychiatrist which will not be until february.

good luck and my thoughts are with you.

thank you for your comments. i have been back to the
doctor and i just went up on my buspar, as i was on the lowest dose bc i dont like when people are overprescribed meds, i tried to beat it without them :) im in the pharmaceutical field so have lots of info on different meds. im hoping the increased dose helps. i have been a worrier, but never had it really affect me like this. my father was killed in a car accident coming up on five years ago and i really havent been the same since, obviously. but even going through all that i didnt have the obsessive thoughts and panic attacks that i have now. i have an appt with a psych. dr coming up, until then im continuing to see my counsellor. i know all the ways im "supposed" to think and what is wrong with the way im thinking, but cant seem to stop it, thats the frustrating part. i just want to be happy and "carefree" again :) ive done ok today but it is a constant struggle & i wish it wouldnt be!
