When I was here back around '05 (and it was a lot more active) crochet/knitting was being suggested.
At that time I was so agoraphobic I could hardly walk to my backyard without being panicked.
Doing nothing but sitting on the couch made me feel worthless.
Somehow I got a crochet hook and had my sister teach me over the phone. It really helped.
Later I started knitting.
If I'm going to a DR or DDS it goes with me. Even if it's a square wash cloth started specifically for the appointment. Any of the idle time is filled with knitting to keep my mind from going to bad places.
Once I got good enough to knit without looking knitting while the dentist works is extremely helpful (I ask if they mind first, I don't want to be a distraction).
This last Christmas I went without Xanax so I was sitting alone in the living room knitting/meditating. My brother-in-law walked in and you would've thought I was sitting their naked.
So if you're a guy knitting you may cause panic in others but it can work to calm you
