First attack about 30 years ago, landed me in ER for two days. Old doctor diagnosis was a prolapsed mitral valve in heart, wrong! Finally 5 years later some gave me a zanax, first time I had ever felt normal for years. Got prescription .5 twice a day. Before that time I would have 3 to 5 attacks a day. After I started meds I had about two attacks a week. Continued medicating same dose for twenty five years then another doctor put me on Paxil but cold turkey on zanax, bad news three trips to ER, back to Zanax. A month ago a doctor cut the Zanx in half and prescribed 20 mg of Citalopram. OK until recently now I' having severe attacks about twice a day. 5:30 am woke up with bad attack, took 1 mg zanax and starting to calm down. Doctors say just talk your self out of it, apparently they have no idea what we are dealing with. In the beginning the attacks started to restrict my travels and confine me to a fairly narrow radius from my house, eventually I worked through that only if I was in possession the my meds. I just found this site and thought I would give a try because I know that you are the only ones that truly understand the hell we go through. Thank you

Welcome to the site! :zzz We completely understand what you are going through here and are here to help you and give you strength and courage :) Unfortunately 30 years ago mental health advisors and doctors really didn't know much about our conditions but now a days things are getting better with the education surrounding panic attacks and panic/anxiety disorders. Seems like you've been a ginnea pig for a lot of medications (which sucks) but unfortunately it is just a test and trial error of meds until you can find the one that works for you. I am on xanax myself. I am on .5mg a day XR the XR stands for a time release pill that gets released into your system for a period of 12 hours and helps you to remain calm and relaxed as long as possible as opposed to my .5 mg of xanax that are 4 hour that I take as needed. xanax has also saved my life but we have to be careful on it because dependency issues to come up and our bodies can quickly become adjusted to our dosage and we end up needing more and more to create that same effect of "normalcy". Unfortunately, which is a scary thing if you notice yourself taking and extra pill every day (I have gone through this, but am getting myself back down again and it is working out pretty successfully). I am also going on my 4th week of being on Prozac an anti depressant and/or SSRI. These pills are long lasting and work with the chemistry in our brains to help with our disorder. The xanax is fast acting and gets released from out system pretty quickly. It is a Benzo and is often referred to as a "band aid" because it is a quick fix. Just know that you aren't alone and you will get major support from this site and will feel comforted just from reading peoples blogs/stories and posts in the survivor forums. You will get great advice on this site and I think it will help you greatly. It has helped me so much and I have long lasting friendships with many people on here.

Keep your chin up! Keep on keepin' on! :p
