Beating Panic Attacks

My story begins in 1972 when I was born.  I suffered from many food and chemical allergies.  I remember my first panic attack when I was 4 years old.  Mom always said it was just butterflies in my tummy.

When I was 16 years old, I started birth contol pills, but got pregnant anyway.  I had a horrible miscarriage.  After that, the panic attacks got worse and agoraphobia set in.

At the medical doctor's advise, my mother took me to a psych doctor and started me on drugs.  After a year, I was able to re-enroll in high school.

Since then I have seen over 50 doctors and therapists.   They always told me it was all in my mind.  They told me to stop looking for a cure and learn to deal with the attacks, so I did.  I learned many relaxation techniques including:  deep breathing, biofeedback, self hypnosis, aromatherapy, talk therapy, reflexology...and the list goes on.  I practaced these techniques until I was perfect at each one.

Life went on, sometimes in control, sometimes out of control.   My mom (my safe person) died of cancer when I was 25 years old, two months before my wedding day.  I married a wonderful man who has always supported me in everyway.  He is my rock!

Two years ago, I had yet another "episode" that kept me in bed for 3 weeks.  I've been trying to climb back into life ever since.  I started seeing a psych doctor again last year and she put me back on a SSRI antidepressant.  I kept getting worse.

I went to my medical doctor begging for help; I couldn't believe it was all in my mind.  I asked for B-12 shots to help make me happy again.  My doctor began a series of blood tests and found interesting facts.  Although my b-12 and folic acid were within normal range, they were very low.  My homocysteine, cardio level was the highest he's ever seen.  My histamine level is very low and Copper is very high.  His diagnosis is acute overmethylation, acute histapeina and acute  homocysteinuria.  He started me on agressive vitamin and supplement therapy.  He discontinued the antidepressant because it was making my condition progress faster.

I have six months to a year before my vitamins will balance out and I will always have to take supplements.  But the doctor suspects all my psych symptoms will diminish.  I have been panic attack free for two months, but my mind still thinks I'm going to have attacks.  I still use Klonopin (a benzo) to contol my mood swings.  I eat 6 times a day, a diet high in proteins and oils.

My mistakes through the years were:  1. taking SSRI and SNRI antidepressants that hid the real problem.  2. Taking multivitamins with copper.  3.  Believing the doctors that there is no cure.

I encourage everyone to get lab tests done.  Never start a vitamin without a blood test indicating you need it.  And look for a wellness doctor instead regular disease doctor.
