Dry mouth and anxiety

Dry mouth is a symptom of panic that is making life very unpleasant. It seems to be systemic, affecting my whole body: drying up my nose, eyes and digestive track too.

Nothing seems to help. I sip water and suck mints all day, have quit alcohol, tea and coffee all to no avail.

I teach primary school and I'm finding being on class almost unbearable as it's such an effort with my mouth so dry. It's like having a mouth, nose and eyes full of dry sand all day, then at night it's much, much worse waking me up with my eyelids actually stuck to my eyeballs. The eye specialist says that the damage done has been to strip the top layer of cells off my eyes which has now affected my sight and I need glasses all the time.

All the eye specialist can do for me is give me gel to put in my eyes.

Does anyone else suffer from chronic dry mouth etc. and do you have any suggestions or strategies that you have found helpful?

Thanks! Leah

Leah,
You're on meds aren't you? My chronic dry mouth was a side effect of the antidepressants - and after a few years I had several dental problems from it.
All you can really do is have heaps of water, and gum helps too. I wish I'd known before I had to start living at the dentist...

You might want to try putting a humidifier in your bedroom at night, and using those wetting solution drops in your eyes.

I had eye surgery and got really used to using it. My opthamologist told me that the eye is one of the fastest healing organs, and keeping them moist and clean they can even heal deep scratches overnight.

Stay with the water too - lots and lots. Eat fresh fruits (grapes, oranges, apples, cherries) as they are also full of water!

Good luck!!
