Staff meetings and panic

Staff meetings still wig my panic out. I think that a big group of 40 adults, with the doors shut is just too much, and this is so frustrating!

Tight, painful chest, pounding heart, hot flushes, pins and needles in my face for nothing!!! They are all people I really like and get on with. No threat what so ever!

I don't understand why this situation is such a constant panic trigger when I have no fear or apprehension of it. The panic catches me off guard each time and I have to fight REALLY hard to stay seated in the room and not literally run outside to get fresh air. I never completely appreciated that saying until I encountered panic!!!!

I make myself stay and breathe and calm down. I'm just so peeved with this panic popping up willy nilly uninvited and giving me such a nasty fright for no good reason! LOL!

Anyone else have this or got any suggestions? I'd appreciate your thoughts...

Leah

PS Otherwise panic is pretty much under control

I understand what you are feeling. Whenever I feel trapped or unable to get out of a situation I feel the panicky sensations start up in me. It helps to tell myself that I'm not trapped and that I can excuse myself and leave at anytime and nobody would even notice. It helps to ask yourself..."what is the worst thing that can happen"? and the answer would probably be..."I get a panic attack and have to leave". That wouldn't be the end of the world...if you give yourself permission to leave and tell yourself it's okay to do so...you probably won't even feel the need to because you won't feel trapped. I learned this at "group therapy". At the beginning of every session the lady who runs the group tells us that we can leave at anytime not questions asked and so far nobody has had to leave!

what helps me in meetings if panic starts is to visualize myself from above the room sitting there. You watch yourself in your mind and it sort of disconnects you from the panic. Its a little strange at first and can take some practice, but you can use it everywhere. If i'm out to dinner and panic starts i'll just visualize in my mind me watching myself in the restaurant eating and also whats around me which helps me to realize there are no real threats. It's kind of cool and nobody will know your doing it.
