Winning at work over panic

Tuesday I had to do a 20 minute oral presentation to 45 people at work (new parents to our school). This was only my third week back after 3 months off with panic.

I had a very tight and painful chest driving to work that day and sitting waiting my turn to speak. However, breathing exercises and other distraction strategies learnt here really worked to ease and control my panic.

I spoke, calmly and confidently much to my own surprise! The presentation went off without a hitch, with lots of lovely compliments at the end. If only these people knew how important that little task was in gaining back my confidence and self esteem and what a huge challenge it had been. In the end I made a leap of faith getting off my chair once announced. Amazing what you can do if you’re prepared, supported professionally and have determination.

I know my boss with other staff that were there were sitting on the edge of their seats. I could almost hear the multiple sighs of relief when I finished and sat down. Then there were plenty of huge grins from the knowing few of my illness.

I know panic will never go away entirely, but I will never allow it to get so out of control ever again. I am very patient. I might not win every battle, but I will win the panic war. If I do ever have such a huge crash again, I won't panic like I did before, because I know it will pass if I'm patient and calm.

I am back. Totally exhausted! But I am back and I am winning over panic. You can too.

Leah

YAY Leah! You have the right attitude - it will pass, you just have to let it.
You did well and I'm so glad you have the support of at least a few co workers. You are definitely not alone with those public speaking nerves - blah. But surely 99% of people feel the same - always remember that.

It doesn't matter if those people knew what a accomplishment you made, because it is obvious that YOU do and that is all that matters. I'm very proud of you! As I'm sure your collegues are too, the ones that know about your panic. You have the right attitude. You are going to kick the panic monsters, A$$!!!!
