Tonight has been a trying night. 2nd grader had to write a story. 6th grader was doing algebra with fractions . I had to figure out what I was doing with the fractions - which I think confused him even more. But, after a while we figured it out. The 2nd grader has had issues with his handwriting, and he blew up when I told him he needed to recopy it. "it will take too long!" He complained and cried - the time he spent fussing he could have had it done. "show me which words are messy" All of them, because you erase too much. He tried to erase more, then decided he didn't like the story and erased the whole thing. Which led to more crying, because he would "never finish". 45 minutes later, he is still throwing a fit. I am just letting it go, because he seems to need to get it out. I finally sat him in front of the TV to calm down a bit, then we can finish it.
I was trying really hard not to do their homework for them, and to not yell or strangle them both.
What did I learn? The younger one needs to get his homework started much earlier - that was my bad. The older one needs me to check in more often - since he normally does fine with all subjects, I assume he is doing ok until he asks for help. I also learned that a hug releases the tension almost as much as strangling them does!
