The Lemon Test

I have spent years researching anxiety/panic disorder through self-help books, the internet, talking to other people etc. One thing that kept coming up is the mind/body connection. As we all know or have heard at least once is this: "its all in your head". I've gotten extremely frustrated hearing that over the years because if its "in my head", then why can't I make it go away?

I firmly believe that its all a matter of "retraining" your brain. Teaching it how to think positive instead of negative. Teach it to feel happiness instead of fear. It IS easier said than done, but with with discipline, dedication and the willingness to change your life for the better, it CAN be done. Try my lemon test. I came across it by accident one day and it really made me think about the whole mind/body connection and how strong our thoughts really are and the impact it can have on our bodies.

Imagine, if you will, that you have a lemon in your hand. Feel the bumpy peel. Feel the knots at the ends. Bring it to your nose and smell it. Now cut it open. Smell the juice. Taste the juice. (Imagining all of this, of course). Does it not make your mouth water? Make your face pucker? Just at the THOUGHT of sucking on that lemon? Or better yet, imagine chewing on a ball of tin foil, lol. If that doesn't make you shiver! Maybe Im just super sensitive, well I KNOW i am, but just the mere THOUGHT made my body, physically react. That was the power of my mind over my body. Know what I mean? The mind is a POWERFUL thing and we ARE in control of our own thoughts. It just takes time to retrain HOW we think. Give it a shot next time you feel anxiety creeping up on you. Describe to yourself, what you see in your surroundings. The brown chair with the metal legs. The fluffy blanket that grandma made you. ANYTHING. Change the path of your thoughts from negative to positive.

Stay Strong!

Faith

You definitely have the right attitude, you are just radiating positivity and I just love it! I have also done this test before, I read it somewhere along my everlasting research as well, haha, except mine were raisins, hehe. It does prove how powerful your mind is. Just think how powerful it can be when you are dreaming. Your mind holds every memory you have ever had and feelings and sensations, such as if you kiss someone in a dream, how you can feel the wind blowing, still smell a flower, go swimming, everything and it feels so real. We just have to try to train our minds to be good to us. You sound like an inspiration to the site! :p

I totally agree with what you say, faith. We do have to retrain ourselves to think and act positively.
