If deep breathing helps you then there is something you can do to train yourself breath more deeply without any effort. Place a canopy over your bed so that you sleep within a somewhat restricted air space. As you sleep the air you breath becomes less and less oxygen rich and your body responds by breathing in more air. Thus a habit of shallow breathing can be overcome. It takes time and depends on how much shallow breathing habit you have. A friend of mine in Sydney has done this and very successfully. All the best.
